What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a type of vein procedure that is minimally invasive and used to treat varicose, spider and reticular veins. This is an in-office treatment that can be performed quickly and effectively.
Sclerotherapy works by injecting a compounded solution directly in the vein. This causes the target vein to shrink, collapse, and be absorbed by your body. This procedure has been used for decades and it tried and proven to work. Depending on the number of veins treated, many patients will see noticeable results after the first session.
What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a type of vein therapy that is minimally invasive and used to treat varicose, spider and reticular veins. This is a common procedure that can be performed in your physician’s office, and it is very effective in eliminating these types of veins.
Sclerotherapy treatment for all three types of veins involves injecting a sclerosing solution directly into a vein using a syringe. The solution then causes the vein to shrink, collapse and be absorbed by the body, removing unsightly vein abnormalities. This medical procedure has been in use since the 1930s. After the procedure, many patients see a noticeable difference in their veins.
Types of Veins
Varicose veins are enlarged veins that appear most often on the back of the legs. These veins are typically blue, purple, or skin colored. Other characteristics of these veins include bulging, dilated, and raised appearance.
These veins are also know as telangiectasias. They include tiny clusters of blood vessels that appear very close to the surface of the skin. They typically appear red but can also be blue and purple.
Reticular veins are not as big as varicose veins but they are larger then spider veins. They typically do not bulge out. The cause of these veins include prolonged sitting, standing, pregnancy, obesity, heredity, and age. This is a very common vein disorder that affects about half of the population after the age of 50.
Benefits of Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy can help with clusters of spider veins and reticular veins by infection the vein with a compounded solution. It is a simple in-office procedure with no down time. The treatment is designed to shrink veins and collapse them allowing your body to metabolize them.
The two compound agents that are used for these treatment are Polidocanol and Sodium Tetradecyl. These compounds are designed to be used on veins that are less then 3mm in width. Sclerotherapy treatment takes only a few minutes and the majority of patients can return to daily activities.
